Sorethumb: An Introduction
By Jason R. Beirens

As an artist it has always been difficult to look at my work without seeing the mistakes. A lot of the time it is all I see. Though I do at times enjoy my work and see it as actual art, once enough time has elapsed between creation and viewing, though it is a rare thing.

As a creator of things, stories, pictures, and all that jazz, it is difficult for me to not see my influences shining like a billion suns at me from details of my work. I look at one picture and see nothing but a Chris Ware line, or at a character and see a Jason design, or a page layout and see Chip Kidd shaking his fist at me for stealing something he once did. Though I am only a pretender to their mighty golden thrones.

My friends might argue the point at times, saying I am a lazy artist. My claimed love for the artist hand being apparent in the work just means I like to scribble, but I expect more from others. I guess there is truth to it, but that doesn’t stop it from being a lie as well. I just know what I like and what I don’t.

Anyway this is all prologue to me introducing my story, or unfinished graphic novel as it is now. I am as of late working very quickly on the idea and illustrations. I have an outline for the story, of where I need the characters to go, what they should do and why, but I am also making it up as I go along, panel by panel. I hope you enjoy Sorethumb. Let me know if you do.
