Nightmare World: "Knee Deep in the Dead" and Other Tales of Terror
(paperback, 96 pages, FC9 Publishing)
by Aaron Weisbrod

Now, I'm probably not the best person to review a graphic novel or anything 'comic book' related. I never read comics growing up, I've never purchased a graphic novel, and most 'comic related' movie tie-in's just don't really do much for me. But, all that being said, I have to say that this collection of 13 stylishly illustrated tales of terror from Aaron Weisbrod had me hooked from page one.

The artwork in this collection is truly striking, and that's one of the first things that really stood out to me. Nearly every one of these stand-alone stories has a different artist's work on it, and that makes this collection even more visually interesting. The styles of the artists range from a straight forward black-and-white sketch on one story, to a lavish full page wash of vivid blues and blacks on the next. The diversity of styles and content make this a very interesting read, for sure.

The stories themselves have a great sense of both the horrific and the hilarious, with Weisbrod showing that he can craft a story well even if it's only a few pages long. What happens when an imaginary friend gets too attached? What will become of a young mother who believes her newborn to be evil? Who will be alive at the end of the night when a serial killer meets his match? These are just a sampling of the stories that are brought to life in "Nightmare World", a place where any nightmare can come true.
